Berlin - Friedrichshain
Friedrichshain Berlin is centrally located to the north east of Mitte. It’s a great place from where to explore the whole of East Berlin and with a main train line, underground stations and many many trams that you'll only find in Berlins east side, it's really easy to get around the city. The south side borders the river Spree where the Berlin Wall used to stand and to south east, Treptower Park which are both great areas for jogging, cycling or roller blading.
The grand avenue running from Alexanderplatz towards Friedrichshain is called Karl-Marx-Allee, which was built in the former communist era as a showpiece road. The tree-lined boulevard is indeed very striking with its socialist apartment blocks giving way to imposing buildings designed in the communist version of a neo-classicistic style referred to in German as “Zuckerbäckerstil” best translated as Disneyland-style.
Much of the film Das Leben der anderen ‘The Lives of The Others’ was actually filmed in this road. The further you go into Friedrichshain towards Boxhagener Platz, the more edgy & up-beat it becomes, as it’s very popular with many young people such as artists and musicians. Near there, the streets around Simon-Dach Strasse are a great place to eat or hang out with many unique cafes, bars and restaurants. All are reasonably priced and offer a wide variety of cuisines from aorund the world. See pics to the right. There also a lot of fashion boutiques and book shops specialising in graphic and interior design. If you want to party the night away, it is very near ‘the clubbing district’ in Köpenicker Strasse. For more information check out the Berlin sightseeing and clubbing highlights in our Berlin guide.
Like most of the Berlin centre, Friedrichshain has become gentrified, but it has still retained much more of its original Berliner charm than other areas. You’ll meet some interesting characters here and it has a great community spirit. On Sundays a very Berliner thing to do is to visit the flea market in Boxhagener Platz, where they sell everything from bikes to Berliner buns. In the summer months there is the wonderful Volks-park to chill out in where you can even watch films at an open-air cinema.
