Prenzlauer Berg, situated North-East of Berlin’s centre, is one of the districts that was during the Cold War part of East-Berlin. A lot has changed since then. Nowadays it’s considered quite a fashionable area, it certainly has a nice relaxed atmosphere with quiet streets and open spaces but some lively spots as well. You’ll find many authentic old style buildings here dating back to the turn of the 20th century which had been terribly neglected during the GDR regime. It is nice to see how these apartment buildings, famous for their high ceilings, grand entrances and inner courtyards, have benefited from an extensive renovation programme since German re-unification, returning them to their former glory. Prenzlauer Berg is the most gentrified of all the former East Berlin areas and is considered even a little pretentious by some. For visitors the Helmholtzplatz is another happening place in which to sample local life. It’s a huge square surrounded by some lively restaurants, and Berlin style cafés and bars where you can drink and chat the night away in the company of the regulars, a mix of locals and an international crowd. In the summer it is a fantastic place to play table tennis on one of the outdoor tables, a very Berliner activity!And then there is Kastanienallee or ‘Casting Allee’ as the locals call it, which has a more dynamic atmosphere amidst more shabby-chic surroundings.
