Berlin Christmas Markets
The great German tradition of Christmas markets has been exported across the world, but the original is always best. There are many festive fetes across Berlin, but these ones are among our favourites.
Alt Rixdorfer - Richardplatz, 12055 Berlin
A visit to Rixdorf, a small mini-district in Neukölln, is like stepping back in time. Cobbled streets and quirky buildings are evocative of village life a few centuries ago. Combine this with fairy lights, wooden stalls, steaming mulled wine and traditional music, and the perfect Christmas scene is complete. For one weekend only...
6-8 December, 2013. Fri 5-9pm, Sat 2-9pm, Sun 2-8pm. Admission: free.
Gendarmenmarkt - 10117 Berlin
The Gendarmenmarkt is the posh part of town, and its Christmas market is fittingly upmarket. Open from the end of November for a month, the market charges €1 entrance, but it’s worth it to experience the unique atmosphere of a Christmas market amid the dramatic domes and columns of this pristinely conserved old square. The kids will love the real life navity sets complete with donkeys!
25 November - 31 December, 2013. Open daily 11am to 10pm; 24 Dec 11am-6pm, 31 Dec 11am-1am.
Schloss Charlottenburg - Spandauer Damm 20-24, 14059 Berlin
This is one of the city’s most famous and popular Christmas markets. For 35 days over the festive season, the Charlottenburg Castle is bathed in romantic light as stalls beneath elaborate pagodas pedle artisan crafts and delicious homemade food.
25 November - 26 December, 2013. Mon-Thu 2-10pm, Fri-Sun 12-10pm. Admission: free.
Spandau Old Town - 13597 Berlin
Spandau was once a village, but over the years the city has swallowed it up and it’s become a district of Berlin. Spandau’s ancient quarter is home to a magnificent citadel and provides a romantic setting for their annual Christmas market that’s well worth the short S-Bahn or Regio train trip out west.
25 November - 23 December, 2013. Sun-Thu 11am-8pm, Fri 11am-9pm, Sat 11am-10pm. Admission: free.
Lucia - Kulturbrauerei, Sredzkistraße 1, 10435 Berlin
Prenzlauer Berg’s Kulturbrauerei is a converted old brewery now devoted to cultural events, stalls and outlets and is smaller in size than the above options making it much more accesible. At Christmas, it is transformed to a popular festive market in the Nordic tradition. Derived from the Latin for ‘light’ (lux), Lucia is up there with Berlin’s most stunning Christmas markets. It's a great family friendly option and for the adventurous types don't forget to try out the scandinavian winter sauna!
25 November - 22 December, 2013. Mon-Fri 3-10pm, Sat & Sun 1-10pm. Admission: free
