Where to Stay in Berlin-Schoeneberg

Where to stay in Berlin? Schoeneberg is located in the former West Berlin, it was the birth-place of German actress Marlene Dietrich and is borders on to the districts of Charlottenburg and Kreuzberg. Schöneberg has a relaxed air about it by day, with many of the foreign language schools based there, and by night it can be very lively, especially around Nollendorfplatz, home to Berlin’s gay & lesbian scene. It is also a smart, largely residential, predominately middle-class neighbourhood with a somewhat fancy feel to it.

Even in the Berlin of the 1920’s & 30’s Nollendorfplatz had a large well organised & fashionable gay and lesbian community. Indeed Berlin was one of the few European cities that embraced and loved its alternative culture, and this still rings true today.

Kleistpark, which is very near to the vibrant café & restaurant life around the streets off Hauptstrasse, is a great place to unwind and stroll around on a nice summer’s day. The park is surrounded by an interesting collection of 20th century architecture, including a neo-baroque court building and a skyscraper by Bruno Taut.

One of the major Berlin attractions in Schöneberg is the busy main thorough-fare, Kurfürstendamm, which is a shopping mecca awash with all the high street, high class brands and big department stores that you’d expect. The most famous being the Ka De We (prounounced Car-Dee-Vee).  This can be found on Tauentzienstrasse, near to the Zoo S-bahn station. The former Templehof airport is now a wide open space great for a stroll and a picnic in the summer months. There are also music festivals and shows that are held in and outside the former airport which has become one of the main focal points in the area.
