Mitte - Where to stay in Berlin
The city centre of the former East Berlin, Mitte is probably the most central area to explore the major Berlin historical tourist attractions. If you are a couple or a group of friends on a whirlwind tour, this is a fantastic area to stay in. It is great for enjoying all the good things life has to offer. You’re truly spoilt for choice here, from visiting Berlin’s famous historical landmarks such as Museum Island and the Brandenburg Gate to unique little art galleries & boutique shops or simply enjoying a good meal or a coffee in one of the many lively restaurants or cafes. Mitte has a vibrant, dynamic atmosphere during the day, but gets quieter at night. However Torstrasse, well known for its edgy fashion shops, bars and restaurants as well as Oranienburgerstrasse remain lively whatever the hour.
Other places worth exploring in Mitte are around Hackescher Markt and the beautiful courtyards in the "Scheunenviertel" which is a great area to shop and people-watch over an expertly prepared coffee, cocktail or dinner. From here, the artistic areas are also easily explored around Auguststrasse home to many of the leading independent local art galleries and laid back local cafes.
Berlin's government district is best seen on foot or by taking a boat ride, which depart from piers all along the Spree. You'll pass many historic landmarks on the way, including the unmistakable Reichstag. Further along the water, near the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, if it’s sunny, you’ll stumble upon one Berlin’s many famous beach bars, full of sun-worshipping Berliners and tourists reclining in deckchairs. Alternatively, nearby Tiergarden is a great place for stroll and beautiful in whatever the season.
