Though a far cry from last month’s similar-sounding fashion-based event, Fasching Week is nonetheless a surprising and enchanting event to both witness and take part in. Not as famous or glamorous as Rio, Germany’s very own version of Carnival is still immensely popular. Beginning on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), local parades happen throughout the week, with the culmination of celebrations happening on Ash Wednesday itself. Across the city, children and adults alike dress up and take to the streets to drive out the evil winter spirits, clearing the way for the joys of spring.
What else to do while you’re there: A daytrip to the Czech border for skiing and snowboarding.
