De Pijp - Where to Stay in Amsterdam

This De Pijp information guide will help you choose where to stay in lovely Amsterdam.

The charmingly tatty area spreading south and east from the imposing Heineken Brewery Experience landmark has become one of the trendiest parts of Amsterdam.

Until recently considered a poor immigrant neighbourhood, the blooming of shabby-chic bars and their (understatedly) well-dressed punters is testament to the fact that this is now still "multi-cultural" but the resolutely ‘cool’ part of town. One of the main attractions is the Albert Cuypmarkt which is one of the biggest open air markets in the country, and offers everything from antique furniture to fine deli foods and the manufactured market tat, bargains galore! On hot days, nearby Sarphatipark soon fills with a young, semi-dressed crowd and the whiff of barbecues, spliffs and supermarket alcohol.

The bar scene is all conveniently clustered around Eeerste van de Helstestraat, between the park and Marie Heinekenplein, behind the famous brewery.  This is an area that most tourists miss, but also one of the best parts of town. It’s pronounced ‘de pay-pe’, means pipe in English.
